Quick Takes: Babymoon Edition

I’m not sure I have enough to say to fill seven quick takes, but we’ll just see what happens.

ONE

Lucia is the calmest, sweetest baby ever. She almost never cries. A bit of a fuss for a messy diaper or when she’s hungry, but otherwise she doesn’t do that fussing for no apparent reason that all my other kids have done. And even when she’s hungry if I can’t feed her right away she’s as apt to just go to sleep as to keep fussing. When we were at the pediatrician on Wednesday, she was sucking hard on my finger at the exam. She cried a bit, but then fell asleep in the car on the way home and slept for a while after we got home.

She sleeps a lot but between naps she’s pleasant and alert, wide eyed and very engaged with me and the kids and Grandma and Dom. She smiles often, even in her sleep.

When she’s done eating, I swaddle her up and put her down and she looks around for a while and then just closes her eyes to go to sleep. No fussing.

Of course things can always change, but for now I have what after four kids I thought was a myth: an easy baby.

THREE

I think my hair has gotten much darker over the past couple of years. I keep finding these long, dark hairs in Lucia’s blankets and wondering who they belong to. There is no one else they could belong to except to me. I think of my hair as being about the same shade as Bella’s, but when I look in the mirror, really look it tells me that’s no longer the case. It’s rather disconcerting.

It reminds me of my friend who always insisted that her mother’s hair was red. Perhaps it had been more red when she was younger, but when I met her it was at best a strawberry blonde. But I always thought of it as dirty blonde. So funny how we often see what we expect to see and not what’s really there.

FOUR

Dom got a new iPad this week, so I’m getting his old one to use “in the schoolroom.” Unlike my husband, I am usually a much slower adopter of new technology, though once I’m over the initial hump I’m usually an enthusiastic user. Believe it or not, I’ve never actually used an iPad for anything. It’s always been Dom’s toy.

I think the timing on this is perfect, though. We’re taking a break from school work and I’m getting a break from housework. I’ve got time to play.

So far Dom has shown me a really cool orchestra app. I know he’s got several different educational apps and game apps on it already for the kids. Something Montessori math.

So what apps do you have and recommend. I’m specifically looking at educational apps, not wanting to load it up with too many distractions.

FIVE

I’ve been drifting in an out of sleep this morning, snuggling with Lucia, reading books to the big kids, who all descended on my bed like a horde of locusts and then almost as quickly disappeared to the dining room to work on art projects and to play at school. Sophie just brought in a marker board to show me she’s been practicing tracing her lower case letters.

Anthony just crawled up on the bed next to sleeping Lucia and curled up. I asked him if he was tired and he nodded, “yes,” so I rubbed his back for a few minutes and now he’s sound asleep. It is so very sweet to see my two youngest sleeping side by side.

SIX

Bella has her first loose tooth. She is very excited.

SEVEN

Watch out, Lucy, here come the boys!

I think they kind of like you, Lucy girl.

Well, look at that. Seven!

Oh, one more.

The discerning of you might notice the lovely pink concoction underneath Lucia. That gorgeous blankie came from the lovely Miss Charlotte, who has embarked on an exciting blog makeover. Charlotte, you can see it’s already being loved.

The even more discerning among you might notice Lucia is wearing the same outfit she was wearing on Sunday when we brought her home. No it hasn’t been washed. It’s been on her the whole time. Not a spitup nor an exploding diaper requiring a change. And I’ve been too lazy to go get another outfit from the laundry room.
